Do you fear the LORD?
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
Proverbs 9:10 (KJV)
This is the same fear as hoping not to let your mother or father down. It is a reverent respect for the King of Kings and LORD of Hosts.
If you don’t fear God, Proverbs makes it clear that you do not have Heaven-focused discernment. There are plenty of opinions, but may I ask, where is the clarity?
Scripture reveals that reverence is upstream of discernment; one cannot discern God’s will while negotiating His authority in one’s own life or in the lives of others.
“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
Psalm 139:23-24 (KJV)
Many will pray that God expose another brother or sister in the faith, but discernment begins when we invite the LORD to expose us. It is as much posture as it is surrender.
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12 (KJV)
This is the crux of discernment; it is not guessing a motive or attempting to pre-empt an action. It is allowing Scripture to separate what is and is not of the Kingdom of Heaven in our lives, and letting His peace settle in the places we have not yet surrendered.
