Have you ever considered a sheep’s personality? “I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own.” - John 10:14 NKJV.
Scripture reveals that Jesus considers us His sheep; He calls us by name and leads us into His plans; this is the good, acceptable, and perfect will of God.
Too often, culture expects us to act a certain way and to be a certain type of Christian, but Jesus calls us His sheep and calls us to offer grace to one another, with all our unique and quirky personalities.
In a field of sheep, you will not find one the same, for there are bold sheep, others cautious, social and even some who are easily startled and affectionate.
Yet Jesus does not offer an approach that is uniform to all; He knows where we need to be reassured or what may frighten us, where to show patience and grace and other times where we need to be carried and pursued.
Jesus does not erase our temperament; rather, the Holy Ghost, who comes to reside within us, sanctifies how we express ourselves as we become more like Him.
The body does not become strong when each sheep is fit into the mould or behaves a certain way; it becomes strong because each learns the voice of their Father in Heaven. Leaders are responsible for teaching the people entrusted to their care the voice of Jesus with all that He offers to His sheep.
How the culture today has forgotten what Paul wrote in 1 Thessalonians 5:14 NKJV: Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all.
When Jesus was among the crowds in Matthew 9:36, He did not become rigid or demand that they act one way or another; He was moved with compassion because they were weary and scattered, like sheep without a shepherd.
Too often, poor leadership is revealed when those entrusted with care dismiss sheep as an “inconvenience” whenever their will or agenda falls through. Sheep scatter when those holding the staff do not resemble or teach what Jesus taught.
We must not interpret those who are exhausted as sheep who are insubordinate, but rather as an indicator that the care they need is absent.
There are times when we must leave the ninety-nine to go after the one who is lost until they are found and offer the attention Jesus commands, lest the leader be subject to the judgment that comes.
How often do leaders lay the lost sheep on their shoulders, rejoicing? “And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.” - Luke 15:5 NKJV.
May I encourage you that the heart of the Good Shepherd is revealed not only in His searching, but also in the love and care for those He carries home.
