Where do you turn in times of trouble? Your inner direction often reveals itself not in peace but in crisis. When something goes wrong, some of us panic, some try to control others, and bitterness can become deeply fracturing. Some will even try to make others carry them because they refuse to carry their own load.
These moments will come. We are not called to deny how we feel or pretend the imperfect feelings are not there, but we are called to locate our refuge and strength in the storm.
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, even though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; - Psalm 46:1-2 NKJV.
Our LORD and King is not merely a lifeboat or a second thought. One does not pray once and forget. He is our refuge, our strength, and ever-present help in times of trouble. He is always available to us.
Jesus did not promise us a life without trial. Sometimes the LORD uses these battles to refine and sharpen our faith so that we become totally dependent on Him. It is also where our faith becomes visible, to ourselves and to those around us.
Trouble should not be mistaken for the LORD leaving or not being by our side. It is often the space where we discover Jesus is standing right beside us, and has already prepared the way for us to walk.
The Lord is good,
A stronghold in the day of trouble;
And He knows those who trust in Him.
But with an overflowing flood
He will make an utter end of its place,
And darkness will pursue His enemies.
Nahum 1:7-8 NKJV
May I encourage you to cry out the name of the LORD, and come boldly to His throne, not as a rejected child but as a cherished son or daughter of the King of Kings and LORD of Hosts.
He is for you every step of the way. He will walk beside you as you turn to face Him in the midst.
It becomes our choice to trust and draw from the Kingdom of Heaven in those moments.
