God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.
Psalm 46:1–3 KJV
There are very few words that I can use to describe the kind of help our God provides when you call upon the name of Jesus. Therefore, if we believe in Him, why does fear still try to take hold of us?
It exposes where our confidence can drift, something I have wrestled with for what feels close to a decade. It was through understanding that this psalm is structured around a repeated refrain that the depth of it began to settle in me.
The King of Kings and LORD of Hosts offers us strength. He is not merely a refuge to hide in, but the strength that enables us to stand again, even among trials and troubles.
The Hebrew language reveals that a “very present help” is not theoretical, nor distant or delayed in principle. When you find yourself in trouble, the LORD can be found. He makes Himself available to you.
How would you react if the most stable thing in your world suddenly gave way? Would you fear? If we have faith the size of a mustard seed, then we are invited to trust that in all chaos, we can run to the throne room with open arms and lay ourselves down in His presence.
